Squat Charleston

The Squat Charleston involves a slightly tricky movement that needs a little practice; as the dancer steps to one side, at the same time they need to lift the other leg up behind the stepping leg. Once this movement is mastered, the move as a whole follows a pattern that is common in the Charleston and in jazz steps: the step alternates between mirrored versions in a pattern LRLLRLRR (see the Choreographed Sequences section for other examples of this sort of pattern).

1. S:JueSL Start with the dancer's weight on their right foot. The dancer performs a jump slightly to the side with their left foot, lifting their right feet up and behind their left knee.
2. S:KsR The dancer performs a kick to the side with their right foot.
3. S:JueSR The dancer performs a jump slightly to the side with their right foot, lifting their left feet up and behind their right knee.
4. S:KsL The dancer performs a kick to the side with their left foot.
5. S:JueSL The dancer performs a jump slightly to the side with their left foot, lifting their right feet up and being their left knee.
6. S:KsR The dancer performs a kick to the side with their right foot.
7. S:JueSL The dancer performs a jump slightly to the side with their left foot, lifting their right feet up and being their left knee.
