The Charleston

The Charleston is a historical predecessor of Lindy Hop which was popular in the 1920's and 1930's It has a swivelling, kicking style and was considered scandalous in its time (as were so many other dance styles).

The Charleston can be danced solo or with a partner, although in its partner form the dancers often break away from each other to dance more showy moves independently. This section only covers solo Charleston moves; some of these can be adapted to partnered forms by the follower taking the natural opposite of the moves, with mirrored legs and directions compared to the leader's steps (so a step forwards on the left foot for the leader becomes a step backwards on the right foot for the follower).
